Membership Eligibility
Color Congress is a membership body that serves people of color (POC) organizations that prioritize filmmakers, leaders and audiences of color in the documentary field, and that wish to work with peer organizations to build power as an ecosystem.
Eligible POC documentary organizations must be based in the U.S. or territories and must offer programming or free services to support storytellers and leaders of color working in the documentary field or nurturing audiences of color for documentaries.
We define People of Color as those who identify as Black or African American and/or of Indigenous, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Asian, Arab and Middle Eastern descent. We recognize the intersectional identities that profoundly shape experiences of people of color and are attentive to differences across identities, geographies, abilities, nationalities, and more.
We consider a people of color organization to be one that has a leadership team composed of majority people of color, with the senior-most position at the organization (if applicable) led by a person of color.
Member organizations can include collectives, working groups, networks, or organizations.
Our definition of nonfiction storytelling and documentary is dynamic and we recognize the field ecosystem intersects with audio, new media, hybrid and scripted works, and more.
Membership Roles & Benefits
Membership benefits include opportunities to submit proposals for funding of field-serving and membership-led projects; to determine which membership-led projects to prioritize for funding; and to participate in monthly Color Congress field building workshops, activities, and other benefits. There is no fee for membership.
Enrollment Process
Color Congress membership enrollment has reopened for 2024.

Once eligibility has been confirmed, our Administrative Associate will reach out with our confirmation form to gather your representatives’ details. Each member organization can select up to 3 representatives to participate in activities.
After we receive those details, your representatives will be added to the Color Congress mailing list and given access to our Members Only page. At this point, you will be a fully enrolled member of the Color Congress!
